Sermon Title: What Do You Think About When You Think About God?
A Psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not []want.
2 He makes me to lie down in [b]green pastures;
He leads me beside the [c]still waters.
3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will [d]dwell in the house of the Lord
[e]Forever.
Primary Scripture: Psalm 145:3; Isaiah 6:1-8; Romans 11:33-36
Introduction
One of the most revealing questions a person can ask themselves is:
“What do I think about when I think about God?”
That question reaches beyond what we say on Sunday. It reaches beyond our church attendance, our Bible knowledge, or our religious traditions. It exposes the true picture of God that lives in our hearts.
If we think of God as distant, we will keep our distance. (GOD in a box Concert with my daughter…)
If we think of God as harsh, we will serve Him out of fear.
If we think of God as weak, we will trust ourselves instead of Him.
But if we see God as He truly is—holy, sovereign, loving, faithful, all-powerful, and worthy of worship—your entire lives begin to change.
Today I want us to examine our view of God.
1. When I Think About God, I Think About His Greatness
Psalm 145:3
“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.”
God is bigger than every problem we face.

Bigger than sickness.
-
Bigger than financial hardship.
-
Bigger than broken relationships.
-
Bigger than political unrest.
-
Bigger than death itself.
We often spend more time thinking about our problems than we do thinking about God’s greatness.
The size of our God determines the size of our faith.
David did not defeat Goliath because he minimized the giant. He defeated him because he magnified God.
Ask yourself:
-
Is my God larger than my circumstances?
-
Do I spend more time worrying than worshiping?
The more we meditate on God’s greatness, the smaller our fears become.
2. When I Think About God, I Think About His Holiness
Isaiah 6:3
“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his GLORY
Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up.
Before God gave Isaiah an assignment, He gave him a vision.
When Isaiah saw God clearly, he also saw himself clearly.
He cried,
“Woe is me! For I am undone.”
A genuine encounter with God produces humility.
We live in a culture that often tries to make God seem casual, but Scripture presents Him as holy.
His holiness means:

He never sins.
-
He never lies.
-
He never changes.
-
He is absolutely perfect.
That should produce both reverence and worship.
The closer we get to God, the less comfortable we become with our own sin.
3. When I Think About God, I Think About His Love
John 3:16-17
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
God’s greatness never overshadows His love.
The Creator of the universe knows your name.
He knows:
-
every tear,
-
every disappointment,
-
every prayer,
-
every fear,
-
every hope.
Romans 5:8
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
God’s love is not based on our performance.
GOD CANNOT LOVE YOU MORE OR LESS THAN HE DOES RIGHT NOW!
LOOK AT THE CROSS BEHIND ME!
Justice demanded payment.
Love provided the sacrifice.
4. When I Think About God, I Think About His Faithfulness
Lamentations 3:22-23
“Great is thy faithfulness.”
People change.
Circumstances change.
Economies change.
Governments change.
Our emotions change.
But God never changes.
He has never broken a promise. (NEVER WILL)
Every believer can testify:
“He kept me when I couldn’t keep myself.”
Think about your own life.

The prayers He answered.

Unanswered Prayers (Old county music song)

The doors He opened.
-
The dangers He protected you from.
-
The grace He showed when you failed.
Faithfulness is God’s character.
5. When I Think About God, I Think About His Sovereignty
Romans 11:33
Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!
God has never been surprised.
Nothing has ever caught Him off guard.
While we struggle to understand tomorrow, God already stands there.
He rules over:
-
history,
-
nations,
-
kings,
-
nature,
-
and every detail of our lives.
Even when life seems out of control, God is still on His throne.
That Should Give You Peace
6. When I Think About God, I Think About Worship
When Isaiah saw God, he worshiped.
When John saw Jesus in Revelation, he fell at His feet.
When the disciples realized who Jesus was, they worshiped Him.
A correct view of God always produces worship.
Worship is more than singing.
It is surrender.
It is obedience.
It is trusting Him even when life doesn’t make sense.
Conclusion
Perhaps the most important thing about us is what comes into our minds when we think about God.
Do we think:
-
He is trustworthy?
-
He is holy?
-
He is loving?
-
He is powerful?
-
He is faithful?
-
He is worthy?
Our view of God shapes:
-
our prayers,
-
our worship,
-
our obedience,
-
our courage,
-
and our hope.
The higher our view of God becomes, the stronger our walk with Him becomes.
Closing Challenge
This week, whenever fear arises, stop and ask yourself:
“What am I thinking about God right now?”
If your thoughts are filled with God’s greatness, fear will lose its grip.
If your thoughts are filled with God’s faithfulness, anxiety will give way to peace.
If your thoughts are filled with God’s love, your heart will overflow with gratitude.
If your thoughts are filled with God’s holiness, you will desire to live a life that honors Him.
“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.” (Psalm 145:3)
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for revealing Yourself to us through Your Word, Your Son, and Your faithfulness. Forgive us for the times we have allowed our thoughts about You to become too small, too distant, or shaped by our circumstances instead of Your truth.
Lord, help us to think of You as You truly are—holy, loving, all-powerful, all-wise, merciful, and worthy of our complete trust. May our thoughts about You deepen our worship, strengthen our faith, calm our fears, and guide our daily decisions.
Transform our hearts so that every time we think about You, we are drawn closer to You. Let our lives reflect the greatness of the God we know and love. May we leave this place with a renewed vision of who You are and a greater desire to honor You in everything we do.
We ask all these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ.
