Sermon Title: “Love Your Enemies”
A Sermon on Matthew 5:44
Scripture
“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”
— Matthew 5:44 (NIV)
Introduction
Matthew 5:44 may be one of the most difficult teachings Jesus ever gave. It goes against human nature. The world teaches us to fight back, hold grudges, and seek revenge. But Jesus calls His followers to a higher standard — the standard of love.
Jesus spoke these words during the Sermon on the Mount, where He described what life in the Kingdom of God should look like. He did not simply tell us to tolerate our enemies.
He said:

Love them
-
Bless them
-
Pray for them
That kind of love is only possible through the power of God.(Holy Spirit)
1. Jesus Calls Us Beyond Human Nature
Loving people who love you is easy. But loving those who hurt us is difficult. (SIDE NOTE REACH ANYWAY)
Jesus said earlier in this passage:
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’”
But then Jesus changed everything:
“But I tell you, love your enemies…”
Jesus calls believers to respond differently than the world. Christians are not called to mirror hatred; we are called to reflect Christ.
When we love our enemies:
-
we break the cycle of hatred,
-
we demonstrate spiritual maturity,
-
and we show the character of God.
2. Prayer Changes Our Hearts
Jesus specifically said:
“Pray for those who persecute you.”
Prayer has a way of softening bitterness. It is hard to sincerely pray for someone while continuing to hate them.
Prayer:
-
releases anger,
-
invites God into the situation,
-
and reminds us that God loves all people.
Sometimes the person we are praying for may never change. But prayer changes us. It frees our hearts from resentment and gives us peace.
Jesus Himself modeled this on the cross when He prayed:
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
— Luke 23:34
If Jesus could pray for those who crucified Him, surely we can pray for those who hurt us.
3. Loving Enemies Reflects the Heart of God
Jesus teaches that God: Matthew 5:45
“He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
God shows grace even to those who reject Him. As His children, we are called to demonstrate that same grace.
Loving enemies does not mean approving sinful behavior or allowing abuse. It means refusing to let hatred control our hearts.
Love says:
-
“I will not seek revenge.”
-
“I will trust God to handle justice.”
-
“I will respond with Christlike character.”
Romans 12:21 says:
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
4. Love Is a Witness to the World
In a divided and angry world, loving enemies becomes a powerful testimony. (I know you and I
Anyone can hate.
Anyone can retaliate.
But it takes the Spirit of God to love people who mistreat us.
When believers respond with grace instead of bitterness, people see Jesus in us.
The world is watching how Christians respond:
-
during conflict,
-
during criticism,
-
during betrayal,
-
and during disappointment.
Our response may become someone’s first glimpse of Christ.
Conclusion
Matthew 5:44
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you
This is not an easy command, but it is a transforming one.
Jesus calls us:
-
to love instead of hate,
-
to pray instead of curse,
-
and to trust God instead of seeking revenge.
You may have someone in your life who wounded you deeply. Today, Jesus is not asking you to pretend it never happened. He is asking you to surrender your hurt to Him and allow His love to work through you.
The greatest example of loving enemies was Jesus Himself. While humanity was still separated by sin, Christ loved us enough to die for us.
May we leave today with hearts willing to pray, forgive, and love the way Jesus loved us.
