God Is Looking for Your Availability, Not Your Capability

Scripture Text
Luke 12:11-12 (NIV)
"When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."

Introduction
One of the greatest misconceptions among Christians is the belief that God only uses the most talented, educated, gifted, or qualified people.
Many believers disqualify themselves before God ever does.
We say:
-
"I'm not smart enough."
-
"I'm not talented enough."
-
"I don't know enough Scripture."
-
"I'm not a good speaker."
-
"Someone else could do it better."
But throughout the Bible, God repeatedly demonstrates that He is not looking for perfect capability.

1. Isaiah — "Here Am I, Send Me"
Isaiah 6:8
"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!'"
Exodus 4:10
"Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent..."

2. Moses offered excuses:
-
"I can't speak well."
-
"I'm not qualified."
Yet when he finally obeyed, God used him to deliver Israel from Egypt.
Lesson: God's power is greater than our weaknesses.
3. Samuel — The Listening Servant
1 Samuel 3:10
"Speak, for your servant is listening."
Samuel was just a boy when God called him.
He wasn't experienced, but he was available.
God used him as a prophet, priest, and judge.
Lesson: Age does not limit availability.
4. David — The Shepherd Boy
When Samuel came to anoint Israel's next king, David was not even invited to the gathering.
He was simply tending sheep.
Yet David was faithfully serving where God had placed him.
Lesson: God often finds available people in ordinary places.
5. The Little Boy with Five Loaves and Two Fish
John 6:9
"Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish..."
The boy didn't have much.
But he gave what he had.
Jesus multiplied it and fed thousands.
Lesson: God can multiply what we make available to Him.
He is looking for YOUR availability.
God is not asking, "What can you do?"
He is asking, "Will you let Me use you?"
In Luke 12, Jesus was preparing His disciples for difficult days ahead. They would stand before rulers, religious leaders, and powerful authorities. Humanly speaking, they were unqualified.
Yet Jesus told them not to worry.
Why?

Because God's power would supply what they lacked.
​
I. God Does Not Call the Equipped—He Equips the Called
Jesus said:
"Do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say."
Think about who these disciples were.
They were:
-
fishermen, laborers, ordinary men.
They were not famous scholars.
They were not political leaders.
They were not trained speakers.
Yet Jesus chose them to change the world.
The world says:
"Get capable first, then serve."
God says:
"Serve, and I will provide what you need."
Moses told God:
"I am slow of speech and tongue."
Gideon said:
"My clan is the weakest."
Jeremiah said:
"I am too young."
Peter denied Christ.
Yet God used every one of them.
Their success came not from their ability but from God's availability to work through them.

II. Availability Demonstrates Trust
When God calls us, He rarely gives us the entire plan.
He asks us to trust Him one step at a time.
Noah had never seen a flood.
Abraham did not know where he was going.
Philip was told to go to a desert road.
The disciples left their nets without knowing what lay ahead.
Availability says:
"Lord, I don't understand everything, but I trust You."
Faith begins where self-confidence ends.
Many times God chooses assignments that exceed our abilities so we will depend upon His strength.
If we could do everything ourselves, we would not need God.

III. The Holy Spirit Supplies What We Lack
Jesus promised:
"The Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."
Notice what Jesus did not say. He did not say:
"You will suddenly become the smartest person in the room."
He did not say:
"You will know everything."
He said:
"The Holy Spirit will teach you."
The Christian life was never intended to be lived in our own strength.
The same Holy Spirit that empowered the disciples empowers believers today.
When God calls:
-
He provides wisdom.
-
He provides courage.
-
He provides strength.
-
He provides words.
-
He provides opportunities.
Our responsibility is availability.
His responsibility is empowerment.

IV. God Specializes in Using Ordinary People
One of the beautiful truths of Scripture is that God often chooses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.
Why?
Because then He receives the glory.
Paul wrote:
— 2 Corinthians 4:7 "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us."
God uses ordinary vessels.
He uses:
-
grandparents, students, retirees, teachers,
-
mechanics, farmers, office workers, pastors, volunteers.
The question is not whether you have extraordinary talent.
The question is whether you have an available heart.
V. Your Availability Can Change Lives
Imagine what would have happened if Isaiah had said no.
Imagine if Peter had refused to leave his fishing boat.
Imagine if Paul had ignored God's call.
History would be different.
Every great movement of God began when someone said:
"Here am I. Send me."
God is still looking for people who are willing.
Someone available to:
-
teach a Sunday School class,
-
visit a shut-in,
-
sing in the choir,
-
help with a mission project,
-
mentor a young person,
-
serve the church,
-
share the Gospel.
The Kingdom advances when ordinary people make themselves available to an extraordinary God.
Conclusion
Many people spend their lives focused on their limitations.
They tell God all the reasons they cannot serve.
But God is not asking for your résumé.
He is asking for your willingness.
Luke 12 reminds us that when the moment comes, God will provide what we need.
He is not looking for the most capable person.
He is looking for the most available person.
The greatest ability in the Kingdom of God is availability.
Today God may be asking:
-
Will you teach?
-
Will you serve?
-
Will you lead?
-
Will you give?
-
Will you go?
-
Will you speak?
You may not feel capable.
Neither did Moses.
Neither did Gideon.
Neither did Jeremiah.
Neither did the disciples.
But they made themselves available.
And God did the rest.
​
Invitation
Perhaps God has been calling you to something you've been avoiding because you feel unqualified.
Today, stop focusing on your limitations and start focusing on God's power.
Tell Him:
"Lord, I may not be capable, but I am available."
And watch what God can do through a willing heart.
​
Closing Prayer
Father,
Thank You for reminding us that You are not limited by our weaknesses. Forgive us for the times we have focused more on our abilities than on Your power. Help us to trust You, follow You, and make ourselves available for Your service. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit and use us for Your glory.
