Sermon Title: “More Than Bread”
Scripture Focus:
Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

Introduction
Church, we live in a world that teaches us to chase what we can touch—money, food, comfort, success. We’re told that if our physical needs are met, then we’re doing just fine. But Jesus gives us a powerful reminder:
​
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”
This statement came not in comfort—but in the wilderness. Not in abundance—but in hunger. And not in ease—but in temptation.
1. The Setting: The Wilderness Test
In Temptation of Jesus, Jesus had fasted forty days and forty nights. He was hungry—physically weak, yet spiritually strong. Then came the tempter, offering a simple solution: (HAVE YOU EVER OFFERED A SOULUTION?)
Think about the time you have fasted or HAVE YOU EVER FASTED? IT’S AN EXPERIENCE YOU WILL NEVER FORGET.
“Turn these stones into bread.”
Jesus had the power to do it. But He refused. Why?
Because every temptation is not about what you can do—it’s about what you should do.
2. Bread Represents Physical Needs
Bread is symbolic of our daily needs—food, shelter, income, security. These are not bad things. In fact, God provides them.
But the danger comes when we believe that bread is enough.
You can have:

A full table but an empty soul

A successful career but no peace
-
A strong body but a weak spirit
-
Recently, I had a conversation with someone who’s relative was not a believer, but the person was a church goer. The person collected antiques to filled the void only Jesus could fill. That’s dangerous and concerning.
Jesus is teaching us that meeting physical needs alone will never satisfy the deeper hunger inside us.
3. The Word Represents Spiritual Life
Jesus responds to temptation with Scripture, pointing back to Deuteronomy 8:3.
He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
God allowed Israel to hunger in the wilderness so they would learn something profound—that their survival didn’t depend on bread alone, but on Him.
The Word of God:

Sustain you when life is uncertain

Guide you when decisions are unclear
-
Strengthen you when we are weak
You don’t just need food for your body—you need truth for your soul.
4. The Real Battle: Appetite vs. Obedience
Satan appealed to Jesus’ hunger—His natural appetite.
And that’s where many of us struggle:

We want immediate relief instead of lasting obedience
-
We want quick fixes instead of faithful trust
-
We feed the flesh but starve the spirit
But Jesus shows us that obedience to God is more important than satisfying temporary desires.
5. Living Beyond Bread
So how do we live this out?
A. Feed on God’s Word daily
Just like you wouldn’t skip meals for your body, don’t skip nourishment for your spirit.
B. Trust God in seasons of lack
Even when it feels like you’re in a wilderness, God is still sustaining you.
C. Align your life with God’s voice
(This is a hard one) Not every opportunity is God’s will. Not every need should override obedience.

Conclusion
Church, bread will keep you alive—but only God’s Word will give you life.
Jesus didn’t just teach this—He lived it. And through Him, we are invited into a deeper way of living—one that is not driven by appetite, but by purpose… not sustained by bread alone, but by the very voice of God.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding us that our lives are sustained by more than what we see and touch. Help us to hunger for Your Word more than anything else. Strengthen us in times of weakness and guide us in truth. Teach us to trust You fully, even in the wilderness seasons. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
