Text: Romans 8:28
Introduction
One of the most beloved promises in Scripture is found in Romans 8:28:
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
1. The Certainty of the Promise
Paul says “And we know.”
This is not a guess.
It is not wishful thinking.
It is confidence rooted in God’s character.
Christians don’t say, “Everything will probably work out.”
Instead, we say: “God is working.”
Even when:
-
prayers seem unanswered
-
doors close
-
suffering appears meaningless
Believers can stand on the assurance that God is orchestrating something beyond what we see.
2. The Scope: “All Things”
Notice Paul says “all things.”
He does not say some things.
This includes:
-
blessings
-
trials
-
disappointments
-
successes
-
mistakes
-
suffering
God uses every piece of life’s puzzle.
3. The Process: “Work Together”
Paul says these things work together.
Individually, events may not look good.
A single ingredient in a oatmeal cookie (My favorite) might taste awful:
-
raw flour
-
baking soda
-
plain oil
-
eggs
But when the Master baker mixes them together, something wonderful is produced.
God is the Master Builder of our lives.
What seems random to us is intentional to Him.
4. The Limitation: “To Them That Love God”
This promise is powerful—but it is not universal.
Paul says it belongs to “those who love God.”
This refers to people who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ.
Those who love God:
-
trust Him
-
follow Him
-
belong to Him
For believers, nothing is wasted.
God even redeems our failures and broken seasons.
5. The Purpose: “According to His Purpose”
The ultimate goal is God’s purpose, not simply our comfort.
God’s purpose is to:
-
shape our character
-
deepen our faith
-
draw us closer to Christ
-
use us for His glory
Sometimes what we call bad circumstances become the very tools God uses to transform us.
Suffering often becomes the soil where spiritual growth happens.
Illustration
Imagine looking at the back side of a tapestry.
From behind, it looks messy:
-
tangled threads
-
knots
-
random colors
But when you turn it around, you see a beautiful picture.
Right now we see the back side of life.
One day, when we stand before God, we will see the whole design.
Conclusion
The message of Romans 8:28 is simple but powerful:
God is not absent.
God is not passive.
God is not defeated by our circumstances.
He is actively weaving every part of our lives into His perfect plan.
So whatever you are facing today, remember:
God is still working.
God is still shaping.
God is still turning it for good.
And one day you will see that every thread had a purpose.
