04-03-2026 🎙️Sermon Title: The Seven Last Words of Jesus

“My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?”

đź“– Matthew 27:46

Text: Matthew 27:46  And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Introduction

There are moments in life when pain is so deep…
so overwhelming…that words fail us.

Physical pain, mental and spiritual pain

But on the cross, in the darkest moment of history,
Jesus did not stay silent.

He cried out:

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

This is not just a cry of pain…
It is a revelation of purpose.

Today, we lean into one of the most mysterious, powerful, and emotional statements Jesus ever spoke.

1. A Cry of Real Suffering

Jesus was not pretending.

This was not symbolic pain.
This was real agony—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

  • His body was broken

  • His blood was poured out

  • His friends had fled

And now… He feels abandoned.

This shows us something powerful:

👉 Jesus understands human pain.

When you feel:

  • alone

  • rejected

  • forgotten

You are not experiencing something foreign to God.

He has been there.

2. The Weight of Sin Fell on Him

This moment is deeper than emotion.

It is the turning point of redemption.

đź“– 2 Corinthians 5:21

“He who knew no sin became sin for us…”

At that moment:

  • The sin of the world was placed on Jesus shoulders

  • Every lie, every failure, every wrong

  • Past, present, and future…… ON HIS SHOULDERS

And because God is holy…
He cannot dwell with sin.

So Jesus experiences something He had never known before:

👉 Separation from the Father

Not because of His sin………but because of ours.

3. This Was Fulfillment of Prophecy

Jesus wasn’t just crying—He was quoting Scripture.

đź“– Psalm 22:1

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Psalm 22 goes on to describe:

  • pierced hands and feet

  • mocking crowds

  • divided garments

Hundreds of years before the cross…

👉 God had already written the script.

Even in suffering, Jesus was saying:

“This is exactly what was supposed to happen.”

4. The Silence of God Is Not the Absence of God

Let’s be honest…

This is the part that hits home.

Because many of us have prayed:

  • “God, where are You?”

  • “Why am I going through this?”

  • “Why does it feel like You’re silent?”

Jesus shows us something life-changing:

👉 You can feel forsaken… and still be in the will of God.

He was not abandoned on purpose—
He was fulfilling purpose.

God was not absent…
God was accomplishing salvation.

5. He Was Forsaken So We Would Never Be

This is the heart of the Gospel.

Jesus took what we deserved
so we could receive what He deserved. (The opportunity for life after death with the FATHER) (NOTICED WHAT I SAID…. THE OPPORTUNITY)

Because He was forsaken:

  • we are accepted

  • we are forgiven

  • we are never alone

đź“– Hebrews 13:5

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Let that settle in your spirit:

👉 He was abandoned… so you never have to be.

6. When You Feel Forsaken—Cry Out Anyway

Notice something powerful…

Jesus didn’t say:

“God, You left me.”

He said:

👉 “My God…”

Even in pain…
He maintained relationship with the FATHER.

That teaches us:

  • Don’t stop praying when it hurts

  • Don’t walk away when it’s hard

  • Don’t let silence from God break your faith

Hold on to “My God”… even when you don’t understand.

Closing Illustration

Imagine a child in surgery…

The parent is not in the room…
Not because they don’t love the child…

But because the procedure must be done to save their life.

From the child’s perspective:

👉 “Where is my father?”

But from the father’s perspective:

👉 “I’m doing what’s necessary to save you.”

That’s the cross.

Conclusion

At Calvary…

  • Heaven was silent

  • Darkness covered the land

  • And the Son cried out

But what looked like defeat…
was actually victory in progress.

So the next time you feel alone…
remember:

👉 The same Jesus who cried out…
👉 is the same Savior who conquered death.

REMEMBER THIS

If you’ve ever felt:

  • abandoned

  • overlooked

  • distant from God

Today is your reminder:

You are not forsaken.

Because Jesus was.
